Health and Safety

Health and safety is a priority for us at Rego. We use chemicals daily and must keep a check on the types of chemicals handled by our students. Our laboratory assistant has access to MSDS sheets and always tries to minimise the risks our students are exposed to. Acid and base concentrations are as low as we can get them. All experiments involving large volumes of toxic gases are always performed in our fume cupboards. All students are issued with the basic safety code each year and are taught what to do and what not to do in the laboratory. Experiments involving additional risk are also discussed before starting any practical session.

I look forward to receiving any suggestions as to how we might improve further in our efforts to ensure a safe environment for our students to develop their skills in. We do ask you to view these documents to improve your understanding of safety in the laboratory and why it is important to us.

In view of the recent risk assessment I promised in the Year Book, I have now put together a file which describes adequately the risks involved in each experiment performed at TRIS. I should also like to mention that we are now affiliated to CLEAPSS, the UK's safety support organization.

An extra safety sheet referring to Year 9 to further clarify the type of behaviour expected in the chemistry laboratory is published below:
